Bible Verses About Love

It’s two days until Valentine’s Day and everyone is talking about it. Over the past several days, I can’t count the number of times someone has asked me, “What are you and Steve doing for Valentine’s Day?” My husband is traveling for business this week so we won’t even be together, and that’s OK. We’re married so isn’t every day Valentine’s Day? Well not exactly. We don’t buy each other special gifts every day or go on a special date every day. I’ll admit that it is nice when we do something special for Valentine’s Day but we don’t have to or need to. We’ve been married for almost 32 years. Yes, he still takes my breath away, but the love we share is more of a choice. It’s more of a Biblical love because we are in a Biblical marriage. The Bible has a lot to say about love. In fact, someone once said that the Bible is God’s love letter to us. I agree. What does the Bible say about love, you might ask? Well, let’s take a look at the following Bible verses about love.

Bible Verses About Love

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes 4:12

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Romans 12:9

Bible Verses About Love

Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. Romans 13:8

Mercy, peace, and love be yours in abundance. Jude 1:2

Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 1 John 4:8

This post wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t include 1 Corinthians, Chapter 13. 1 Corinthians 13 is widely known as “The Love Chapter.” Love is a hard word to describe but this chapter in the Bible beautifully describes what love is. Here is 1 Corinthians 13 in its entirety.

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.  If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

The Holy Bible, 1 Corinthians 13
